Orléans' history goes as far back as the 1830s, with francophone and anglophone families arriving in the area. After about 140 years Orléans was incorporated into the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. Between the years of 1981 to 1991, the population of Orléans tripled! The commercial side arrived shortly after with the expansion of Place D'Orléans and several new businesses. In 2001, Orléans officially became an Urban sub-area of Ottawa, starting the housing boom that lead to many housing and residential developments.
Orléans is a rapidly growing suburban neighbourhood in the east end of Ottawa. It is approximately 16 km (20-minute drive) from the downtown core. Sub-neighbourhoods include Avalon, Cardinal Creek, Chapel Hill North and Chapel Hill South.
There are approximately 116,688 residents in Orléans. The average age of the population is 39 years old, with 68% being between 15-64 years.

Orléans is home to the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex. This houses the Elizabeth Manley Figure Skating Arena, the Roger Sénécal Arena, squash and racquetball courts and a fitness centre. Plenty of recreation programs are offered, including fitness classes, summer camps, indoor cycling, aqua fitness, swimming lessons, and general interest programs.
