Your Guide to Barrhaven

Are you looking for a great neighbourhood to raise a family? Barrhaven is the place for you! This area is filled with residential neighbourhoods, good schools, and has plenty of activities and shopping.

The Barrhaven area had always been home to First Natiins people, and Jockvale Road follows an ancient path that was originally a trail through the wilderness. It was during the 19th century that the area became populated with mostly European Farmers.

Modern Barrhaven as we know it started being built up in the 1960s, beginning with Mel Barr, for whom the community is named. The area grew rapidly into a community of several tens of thousands of people. The commercial side was slower to arrive. In 1990 the whole area had a single grocery store, no movie theatres, and no bars. Once the Barrhaven Town Centre complex opened, more commercial activity followed.
